Need chip PIC18F26K22-I/SO
We need 1000 pcs. PIC18F26K22-SOIC, but situation on the chip marked is not nice. We have search the marked and about November-22 if we are lucky...
We can use other 28pin SOIC, minimum 64K flash, and 1K EEPROM, 3-4,5V. I found that the code must be changed to fit new chip. We don't want that, it is for a existing product!
Chip must be 1/1 identical, so don't suggest any smart stuff.
Any suggestion where to get it? |

wow, 1st time in 25+ years can't get PICs from DIGIKEY.
As Mr T points out, they have them.
I suggest you buy 1200-1500, as shipping would be the same and I assume you use this PIC in several products ??
OK, I checked Microchip 'sales', zero stock BUT have 5000+ pcs in DIP.
Can you make an 'adapter' PCB ? I understand 'layout and install' might be tricky BUT I've done this in the past, though with DIP replacing DIP.
Just trying to thing of options for you.

Yes, I'm feeling 'smug' recently. Quite early last year did a long talk with our
purchaser, and despite the cost, we 'pre-ordered' over a year of components
for every major board. Then as we use these we carry on ordering this far
ahead. It is amazing how many routine things have got really hard. Quite
basic things like resistors, in some values have got months of lead time.
Capacitors, chips etc. etc... |

Late last year I managed to convince management to allow me to purchase PICs....over 40,000 of them. That should last us through the middle of 2023 at the very least, and perhaps 'til the end of 2023 depending on orders.
I had to order over 16 different chips, all "basically" the same in terms of peripherals and minimum memory, but all in the 40 pin DIP package. I cleaned out almost all worldwide stock of those particular PICs, from reputable suppliers. The only stuff I didn't touch was from the family with particularly ugly errata. At any rate, I'm not looking forward to all the assembly revision variations I'm going to need to track, nor am I looking forward to the different FW variations either.
Tomorrow I sit down with our purchaser and try to secure a similar number of other critical components to last us through the same period. One component in particular which retails for less than $1 USD qty 1,000 is available from a particularly suspect "pirate" firm in the far east for over $27 USD regardless of quantity. I sincerely hope that all of these firms suffer similar fates as those people who initially horded toilet paper in the early days of the pandemic; they attempted to flip that stock for huge profit only to be stuck with several lifetimes' worth when supplies started to rebound.
Edit: definitely contact 4Star electronics - I've dealt with them in the past and they're reputable. The problem (that I hope isn't applicable in your case) is that the stock they show is from a worldwide pool, not necessarily from stock under their roof. They showed stock on a dsPIC I needed last summer, but when I contacted them, it turns out that they didn't actually have them, nor could they get them. Your best bet will be to ask a contract electronic manufacturer: they have a long list of suppliers they trust and can often find something you cannot.
Edit 2: Greenlight electronics is another reputable source. They're showing stock on the SO package of the processor you need, in both industrial and extended temperature range. |

Thanks for the suggestions:-)
Yes situation is not good, dealers marked is not for our company, too expensive and insecure.
Things we previously took for granted have been turned upside down now.
I hope the situation all get normal again:-) |

It is going to take at least a couple of years.
4Star are as 'secure' as almost all suppliers.
Did you try Newguy's suggestion of Greenlight?.
Also have you asked MicroChip directly?.
In the UK at least they are very good at telling you what the stock
situation is, and who has stocks of a part.
Too expensive?. Afraid part prices reflect availability.
They were actually the cheapest of the suppliers I could find that showed
stock...

Yes we are in contact with Microchip direct. We have mailed your suggestion and @Newguy's too. Now we must wait and see...
I will post the result if any:-) |

Will it be ok to use the PIC18F27K40T-I/SO as a replacement for PIC18F26K22.
Pin-pin look ok.
Is there anything to be nervous about? |

hmmm
1) maybe ask a Microchip tech at 'head office' as to using it ? They may send you samples, free of course.
2) does your compiler and programmer 'understand' it ?
3) be sure to disable ALL new peripherals it has vs the 26K22 !
4) if possible, take your existing program, replace the PIC.H, then compile. Have a look at the listing file, for anything 'wrong' or 'different'.
others may have used it ?
oh yeah, check for erratas......

It depends on your application. It should be compatible but have a look at its errata. Lots of concerning A/D issues and a potentially crippling MSSP corruption issue. If you don't use the A/D nor SPI, you should be good. |

Your original comment applies:
"I found that the code must be changed to fit new chip".
Thew biggest difference is that the 27K40, is a PPS chip, so will need
#PIN_SELECT setups for every peripheral, and the #use lines should use
the peripheral names, not the pin numbers. Look at the sticky at the
top of the forum about PIN_SELECT.
